AI reads YOU before any human does
Search has changed. Hiring has changed. Professional discovery has changed. Not gradually — structurally.
A lot has been written about this change through the lens of companies, but these structural changes also affect individuals — professionals, solopreneurs. That last part is what I want to focus on.
We’ve moved from a world where people read you to a world where systems interpret you first. The change is invisible to most professionals, but the implication is seismic.
Your reputation used to travel through referrals, media mentions, directories, and word of mouth. Today it increasingly travels through an AI summary. Practically speaking, this means that before a patient books, before a client calls, before a journalist reaches out, before a recruiter shortlists — AI gatekeeps the opportunity. And it’s invisible to you.
The data is decisive. OpenAI now reports roughly 700 million people using ChatGPT every week, and its own September 2025 research found that looking up information about people, products, and events has become one of its most common uses — behaving as a close substitute for web search.
For anyone whose livelihood depends on visibility and reputation, that’s not a small shift. It’s a new layer sitting between you and everything you want to be considered for — and it isn’t always accurate.
As fewer people find you through your website and people increasingly favor machine interpretation for answers, professionals need to put infrastructure in place to ensure they are visible and accurately portrayed.
Here are a few things to do today
- Do a quick scan of what large language models return about you. This is directional — the models are non-deterministic, meaning each person gets an answer customized to what the system knows about them.
- Update your LinkedIn profile. Make sure you have a headline that is more than your title, and that you include quantifiable outcomes — these are critical. LinkedIn is the #1 source cited by LLMs for professional queries. A fantastic resource for this is Lilypath’s Authority Builder Blueprint. It analyzes your profile against what the LinkedIn algorithms judge it against, tells you what’s working and what’s not, and gives you copy-ready content to fix it. A huge time-saver.
Takeaway: Before a human forms an opinion of you, a model already has. The only question is whether it got you right.
